The Ottawa region is home to over a dozen vineyards, some located just a 30-minute drive from the iconic Parliament Hill. Ottawa Name<\/a> explores the evolution of this burgeoning industry and provides a guide to the region’s wine routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ottawa and Wine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Local sommelier Julie Ricard, a graduate of Algonquin\u2019s sommelier program, discovered Ottawa\u2019s hidden winemaking gems through a chance meeting with Dany Perrault, the “godfather” of the region\u2019s wine industry. Inspired by the quality of locally produced wines, Julie set out to share this secret with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eastern Ontario boasts agricultural land rich with clay and stony limestone soils. Combined with warm summers and the introduction of cold-hardy grape varieties like Frontenac and Marquette, the region produces truly delightful wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local winemakers have also drawn on the expertise of vintners from Eastern Quebec, where similar climatic conditions have supported a thriving wine industry for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ottawa\u2019s winemakers are constantly experimenting with different styles, blending the essence of local grapes with fruits from the Niagara region to create unique flavour profiles that appeal to discerning palates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Domaine Perrault (Navan, Ontario). This vineyard offers over 15 varieties, including ros\u00e9, white, medium-bodied, and full-bodied red wines. The collection also features balanced dessert wines. Founders and mentors Dany and Lisa Perrault, alongside their daughters, remain central figures in the regional wine scene. Domaine Perrault is one of the few original wineries still in operation. Winemaker Cathy Duchesne, an Ottawa native, crafts standout selections. Julie recommends trying the ros\u00e9 Merilys, the white Zanibel, and the elegant red Cabernet Franc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Vignoble Clos du Vully (Navan, Ontario). Located next to Domaine Perrault, this vineyard produces nine varieties. Owned by Jean-Daniel Etter and his partner Anne Grenon, the winery reflects their diverse backgrounds. Etter\u2019s experience began on his family\u2019s dairy farm in Switzerland, while Grenon honed her skills in Hawke\u2019s Bay, New Zealand. Julie highlights the fortified wine Frontenac Blanc as a must-try.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Jabulani Vineyard & Winery (Richmond, Ontario). Owned by Tom and Janet Moul, this winery boasts over 11,000 grapevines. Tom\u2019s journey in winemaking began during his teenage years in Africa. The vineyard has earned 11 international awards, and Julie recommends sampling the Market Ch\u00e9te wine and their signature iced apple cider.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. KIN Vineyards (Carp and Kinburn, Ontario). Run by Chris and Sandra Van Barr, KIN Vineyards is the first in the region to focus on cultivating cool-climate grape varieties. The owners donate part of their profits to local arts and environmental initiatives. Julie suggests trying the Kin Chardonnay, which is known for its oak richness and complexity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
