Transit access is unusually good: Mooney&#8217;s Bay station on O-Train Line 2, the Trillium Line, sits beside the park. That line reopened to the public on 6 January 2025 after a rebuild that extended it to 19 kilometres and pushed the southern terminus out to Limebank, with trains running roughly every 12 minutes; Carleton and Dow&#8217;s Lake are the next two stations northbound. Several OC Transpo bus routes also stop nearby. Entry to the park and to the beach is free, there is no gate and no ticket, and the grounds follow standard City of Ottawa park hours, opening early and closing late in the evening. Allow two to three hours for a straightforward beach afternoon, or half a day if you add the pathway, the track or a festival.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring arrives loudly here: the Rideau runs high and fast with meltwater, migrating waterfowl stage on the bay, and the track season starts well before the beach does \u2014 the sand is open but unsupervised and the water is genuinely cold into late May. Summer is the park at full volume, with lifeguards on duty, paddleboards on the water, the dragon boat festival in June and daylight lasting past nine o&#8217;clock. Autumn is the connoisseur&#8217;s season: the maples along the pathway turn, the crowds vanish, and the running weather is the best of the year. Winter in Ottawa is severe and long, with deep cold and reliable snow cover, and the park answers it with about five kilometres of groomed, floodlit ski trails and a separate snowshoe track rather than closing down. Note honestly that the big hill is no longer an approved sledding site \u2014 the City removed it from the list in 2017 after repeated serious injuries and now fences it off in winter. For skating, the Rideau Canal Skateway is the short trip downstream: 7.8 kilometres of maintained ice between the Hartwells Locks near Carleton University and the locks below Parliament Hill, free, open around the clock when conditions allow, and usually running from January into early March.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The bay is not natural in its present shape. When Lieutenant-Colonel John By&#8217;s Royal Engineers built the Rideau Canal between 1826 and 1832, they dammed the river just downstream at Hog&#8217;s Back, and it proved one of the hardest pieces of work on the entire canal: the first contractor abandoned it as impossible, the military sappers took over, and an ice jam swept the unfinished dam away on 3 April 1829. When the structure was finally completed in 1831 it raised the water level at that point by 12.5 metres, or 41 feet, and the drowned reach of river upstream became the wide, calm bay you see today. The name honours the Mooney family, three generations of Rideau Canal lockmasters who between them held the post for 87 of the lock station&#8217;s first 112 years, beginning in 1856. The stadium carries the name of Terry Fox, the young Canadian who ran his Marathon of Hope across the country on one leg to raise money for cancer research. The fitness park honours Sue Holloway, who in 1976 raced cross-country skiing at the Innsbruck Winter Games and kayak sprint at the Montreal Summer Games in the same calendar year, then took silver in the K-2 500 m and bronze in the K-4 500 m at Los Angeles in 1984. The playground was a television project as much as a construction one: it was built with Toronto&#8217;s Sinking Ships Entertainment for the TVO children&#8217;s series Giver, with young people from across the country helping to build the structure representing their own province or territory. The dragon boat organisation was founded in 1993 and ran its first races here in 1994 with the help of the Hong Kong Canada Business Association; it has since grown into the largest festival of its kind in North America, drawing crowds well beyond 75,000 over the weekend.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the posted water-quality status before you swim. Always lots of kids. Fresh, clean air. It&#039;s located far from the roads. A great place for all seasons. The only thing that upsets me is that there&#039;s no washroom from October on.
