Godmother and godfather are formal words for a relationship that in practice was made of drives, phone calls, school concerts and the standing offer of a spare room — and none of that fits under best wishes on your special day. What follows is written for the real version of the job: messages for a godmother, for a godfather, ones from a godchild who is now an adult and can finally see what those years cost, ones from the parents who asked and were never turned down, and honest wording for the case where the two of you have quietly lost touch. Whatever this next decade brings, it should be a great deal kinder than the last one. Happy birthday.

2
You have made a habit of turning up without being asked — at the hospital, at the recitals nobody else could face, at the awkward family dinners. Today somebody turns up for you. Happy milestone birthday, and thank you for every one of them.

3
Round numbers make people take stock, so here is mine: you were steady during years when a lot of other things were not. That is the entire list, and it is a long one. Wishing you a birthday that feels like the milestone it actually is.

4
Happy birthday. You have never once introduced yourself as anything more than a family friend, which is a considerable understatement, and everybody in this room knows it. Take the day, take the fuss, and let us make something of it for once.

5
There are people who send a card and people who arrive with a casserole and a plan. You have always been the second kind. On a birthday this size the least we can do is show up the same way. Wishing you good health and an easy year.

6
A milestone is only impressive when you look at what stands behind it, and behind yours are decades of holding a family together at the edges without ever mentioning it. Happy birthday. May these next years ask far less of you and give back more.

For a godfather on a milestone birthday

1
Happy birthday, and congratulations on a number that suits you better than it has any right to. You have been a steady presence for as long as I can remember, usually with a toolbox in the trunk. May this be the year that asks nothing of you.

2
A round birthday deserves plain speech, so: you taught me how to boost a car, how to shake a hand, and how to stay quiet while somebody else is still talking. That is more than most people manage. Wishing you a very good day and a very good decade.

3
You have never been one for speeches, which is unfortunate, because today there will be several. Sit through them. You have earned every word twice over. Happy milestone birthday, and thank you for years of showing up without being asked twice.

4
Milestone birthdays bring out the photo albums, and in most of ours you are standing slightly off to one side, holding something for somebody else. That is exactly who you have been to this family. Happy birthday, and let today be about you.

5
Wishing you a birthday with decent weather, good company, and nothing at all that needs fixing. You have fixed enough for one lifetime, and there is a whole family here that noticed every time. Happy milestone, and many quiet years ahead.

6
The number is large and you will make a joke about it before noon. Fine. Underneath the joke, know this: you were dependable in a way that shaped how I do things now. Happy birthday, and I hope the year ahead is generous with you.

From a grown-up godchild

1
When I was small I assumed every child had someone like you. It took me years and a certain amount of comparing notes to work out how rare it was. Happy milestone birthday from the godchild who figured it out eventually and has been grateful since.

2
You have been in my life longer than most of my own decisions. For a birthday this big the honest thing to say is that a fair amount of how I turned out came from watching you. Wishing you a wonderful day and a much easier year.

3
I am old enough now to see what those weekends cost you in time you did not really have. Thank you for all of them. Happy milestone birthday, and this year I would like to be the one doing the driving for a change.

4
Godparent is a strange word for what you have actually been, which is the adult I could call when I did not want to call my parents. That is a job with no title and no end date. Happy birthday, and thank you for taking it seriously.

5
The photographs from back then are mostly of you holding me while somebody else takes the picture. I have been meaning to mention for a while that it never really stopped. Happy milestone birthday, with a great deal of love from your godchild.

6
A big birthday is a fair excuse to be sentimental once, so here it is: you have been unfailingly on my side, including the stretch of years when I was difficult about it. Wishing you health, good company and a decade that treats you well.

From the parents, to the person who said yes

1
Years ago we asked you to take on something vague and unpaid, and you agreed without asking what it involved. You have been making good on it ever since. Happy milestone birthday from the two people who have never stopped being grateful.

2
Happy birthday. When we chose you, we were guessing, and it turned out to be the best guess we have ever made about anything. Our child has had an extra adult in their corner because of it — and, frankly, so have we.

3
A milestone birthday from the parents, then: thank you for the pickups, the sleepovers, the school concerts you sat through with an admirably straight face, and the hundred small things we never had to ask for twice. Have a beautiful day.

4
There is a version of the last two decades in which we did all of it on our own, and we are very glad it is not the one that happened. Happy milestone birthday, and thank you for being the person we could call at any hour.

5
You have loved our child without ever once trying to take our place, which is a far harder balance than anyone admits. Happy birthday, and may this new decade hand back some of the time you have given away so freely.

6
Happy milestone birthday from everyone under this roof. You were family long before anybody thought to say the word out loud, and today the whole house is on your side. May the year ahead be kind and thoroughly uneventful.

When the years have put distance between you

1
We have not spoken as often as either of us meant to, and a birthday this size is a good reason to break the quiet rather than let it stand. I have thought about you far more than the record shows. Wishing you a very happy milestone.

2
The years got busy and the calls got rarer, but the part where you mattered to me never changed. Happy milestone birthday. If you are up for it, I would rather fix the distance this year than apologize for it again next one.

3
It has been a long while, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What I will say is that a round birthday brought you straight to mind, which tells me something worth acting on. Wishing you health, good company and a fine day.

4
Happy birthday. I know we lost touch somewhere along the way, and I know most of that sits on my side of the ledger. The wish is genuine all the same: a good day, a good year, and a coffee whenever it happens to suit you.

5
Distance has a way of building up quietly until it starts to look deliberate, and I do not believe it ever was. On a birthday like this one I wanted you to hear from me directly. Wishing you every good thing in the decade ahead.

6
We do not see each other the way we once did, and ordinary life explains most of that. Almost everyone here has a story about the person whose birthday it is, and in nearly all of them they are doing something practical for somebody else without having been asked. That is a rare way to spend a few decades. To your health, and to a year where the favour finally goes the other way.

2
A quick word before the food goes cold. Godparent is one of those terms that sounds ceremonial until you watch somebody actually do the job: the drives, the calls at odd hours, the school concerts of genuinely questionable quality. That is what has been going on quietly here for years. Happy milestone birthday, and thank you on behalf of all of us.

3
I was asked to say a few words, so I will say the plainest ones I have. A milestone birthday looks backwards by definition, and looking back at this one, the thing that stands out is consistency — the same person, the same steadiness, decade after decade, through everything the rest of us managed to put you through. Please raise your glasses.

4
Two sentences, and then I will sit down. There are people who join a family by marriage, by blood or by paperwork, and then there are people who simply decide to stay, which is what happened here a long time ago and never stopped. To the birthday we are marking tonight, to the person marking it, and to all the years still ahead.

5
Before the cake arrives: whoever came up with the idea of choosing an extra adult for a child had somebody like this in mind. The proof has been walking around the room all evening refilling other people’s glasses on their own birthday. Please stop doing that for one hour. To your health, to a very good decade, and to all of us being here to see it.

Questions and answers

Which birthdays count as a milestone for a godparent, and should the number go in the message?

Anything ending in a nought is treated as a milestone, and in most families the fifth years get marked too once someone is past sixty. Whether the number belongs in the text depends entirely on the person: some announce it themselves for weeks beforehand, others would rather the card said nothing at all. If you are unsure, ask whoever is organizing the party — they will already know. A safe compromise is to write about the decades rather than the digits, since a line about years of showing up says the same thing without printing the figure on the front of the card.

Nobody in the family is religious. Does it look odd to make something of the godparent connection?

It looks odd only if the message leans on wording nobody in the room uses. In a great many households here the role was chosen for exactly the reason it still holds: an extra adult who commits to a child on purpose. That is worth naming on a big birthday regardless of what the family does or does not observe. Write about what the person actually did — the pickups, the standing invitation, the years of being reachable — and the connection explains itself. If you want the title in there without any weight on it, godparent used plainly in one sentence is enough.

The card is going from the whole household. How do you write one that speaks for the parents and the godchild at once?

Split it rather than blend it. Two short paragraphs in two different hands read far better than one committee sentence trying to cover everybody: the parents thank the person for the years of help, the godchild says what they remember. Sign each part with the name that wrote it. If the godchild is small, let them add one line in their own writing and do not correct the spelling — that is the part that gets kept. Keep the whole thing on one card. Two separate cards arriving on the same day makes the occasion feel administered rather than celebrated.

We have not spoken in years. Is a milestone birthday the wrong moment to reappear?

It is one of the better moments, because the occasion carries the message and nobody has to explain why they got in touch. What matters is the register. Do not open with an apology paragraph, do not itemize the reasons the two of you fell out of contact, and do not promise a level of contact you are not going to keep up. One honest sentence acknowledging the gap, then the wish, then a concrete and modest offer — a coffee, a call at a time that suits them — is the shape that works. If there is no reply, leave it there. The card was still worth sending.

Somebody is going to hand me the floor at the party. How long should a few words be, and when do they happen?

Under a minute, and before the food rather than after it — once plates are down, attention does not come back. Ask the host in advance whether anyone else is speaking, so two people are not covering the same ground. Say one specific thing rather than three general ones: a single story about the person is worth more than a list of qualities. Finish on the toast so the room knows exactly when to lift their glasses, and hold the last line for it. If you are nervous, write the closing sentence on a card and read it; nobody minds a page, and it beats trailing off.

A round birthday for a godparent is one of the few occasions where the usual card wording runs out almost immediately.
