The Origin of Akrot Sheep

Efforts to breed sheep for meat production began in 1966. The primary goal was not only to create a larger animal but also a breed capable of rapid reproduction. Additionally, Akrot sheep were designed to accelerate genetic and other sheep-related research.

Originally intended for research purposes, the Akrot breed quickly gained attention due to its productivity and high fertility rates. By the 1980s, the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture carried out selective breeding to maintain the breed’s genetic foundation. However, in 1986, Akrot sheep were recognized as a commercial breed, becoming a top choice for meat production.

The Akrot breed was developed through a crossbreeding program in Ottawa’s Animal Research Centre. Its name derives from the acronym of the Ottawa research centre itself.

Crossbreeding Process:
The Akrot breed resulted from combining several sheep breeds, including:

  • Suffolk – 37%
  • Ile-de-France – 28%
  • Leicester – 14%
  • Cheviot – 7%
  • Romney – 6%
  • Other breeds (Lincoln, Corriedale, Shropshire, East Friesian, Finnsheep, and Southdown-Dorset) collectively contributed 8%.

This breeding program culminated in a robust meat-focused breed perfectly suited to Canadian agricultural needs.

Distinctive Characteristics of Akrot Sheep

The Akrot sheep is known for its medium-to-large size, making it ideal for meat production. Key features include:

  • White fleece with slightly mottled, wrinkle-free faces.
  • Wool-free faces, with soft, slightly shiny wool elsewhere on the body.
  • Muscular torsos and legs, with a long, thin tail.

Weight:

  • Ewes weigh 75–95 kg.
  • Rams weigh 80–100 kg.

Growth and Reproduction:

  • Akrot lambs grow quickly, reaching a market-ready weight of 37 kg by 118 days.
  • At 230 days, they reach full maturity, weighing around 50 kg.
  • Gestation lasts approximately 147 days, with ewes commonly producing multiple lambs.

These sheep are well-suited to Canada’s climate, tolerating cold temperatures and thriving both on pastures and in specialized farms. They require minimal care and adapt quickly to different environments.

The Akrot sheep’s meat-heavy build and rapid growth rate make it a highly efficient choice for farmers. Since the late 20th century, Akrot sheep have been bred extensively on farms around Ottawa. Their meat production efficiency and adaptability have solidified their place as one of Canada’s most popular breeds in the 21st century.
